Save the World: getting started

Save the World is Fortnite’s co-op mode: up to four players against hordes of monsters (the "husks"), building defenses and traps. Since 16 April 2026 it is free for everyone.

How to get in

  • Open Fortnite, go to Play and pick the Save the World tile among Epic’s experiences.
  • It runs on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2. It isn’t on the original Switch, phones or tablets.
  • The first mission is the tutorial: it teaches building, crafting weapons and taking out husks. Don’t skip it.

How progression works

The campaign goes through four zones, from easiest to hardest: Stonewood, Plankerton, Canny Valley and Twine Peaks. Each zone has harder missions and a series of Storm Shield Defenses (your base) that unlock the next one.

The number that matters is your Power Level: it comes from heroes, survivors, defenders and research. Missions show a recommended level: stay close to it, not far below.

What to do in your first hours

  • Follow the story quests: they hand you items and features in the right order.
  • Do your daily quests every day: they are the steadiest source of rewards.
  • Push the Storm Shield Defenses as soon as you can: they unlock zones, storage and new features.
  • Pick one hero loadout and level it, instead of raising many heroes a little.
  • Don’t recycle weapons right away: they also go into the Collection Book, which gives rewards.

Playing with others

You can play missions alone, but with others you go faster and earn more. If you join a public match, help with the objective: build, place traps and defend, don’t just farm materials.
